Which login method for your situation
You're Luxembourgish and resident. Your electronic identity card (eID) is enough, if its certificates were activated when you applied for it. You read it with your smartphone using the GouvID app: no card reader needed. You can also sign your procedures with it.
You're a resident without Luxembourg nationality. The Luxembourg identity card is reserved for Luxembourg nationals. Your residence permit or registration certificate can't be used to log in. Your simplest route: LuxTrust Mobile, an app that also works for your online banking. If you come from another European Union country, you can also use your country's digital identity, with the same limit as cross-border workers.
You're a cross-border worker. The eIDAS method (the official digital identity recognised between European countries) of France, Belgium or Germany is accepted. It lets you log in and view your data. It does not let you sign electronically a procedure, such as the tax return in the online assistant. To sign, you need LuxTrust.
You don't have a national ID number yet. Without it, you can't register. As a resident, you receive it after your declaration at the commune. As an employee, your employer requests it for you from the CCSS (Joint Social Security Centre): it appears on your social security card. In the meantime, some procedures can be done without logging in, such as the application for an identification number.
Private space or professional space?
The private space is for your personal procedures: taxes, certificates, benefits. You see your data from the official registers and the follow-up of your requests.
The professional space is for acting on behalf of an organisation: company, self-employed person or association. As an employee, you don't need one. Whoever creates it becomes its administrator and can invite other people. You can have both with the same login method.
What you can do once logged in
- Your tax return in the free assistant, signed with LuxTrust or your identity card. To know which one applies to you, read tax return or annual adjustment. If you prepare it with a tool like taxx.lu, you're still the one who sends it.
- Your tax card received online rather than by post, and its corrections. See how to read and correct it.
- Your residence certificate, generated as a PDF for free, if you live in Luxembourg. Administrations usually want it dated less than 3 months ago.
- The procedures for settling in: many of the steps in our guide to moving to Luxembourg can then be followed online.
Two worked examples
Take Ana, 29, Portuguese, who arrived in Luxembourg City in September 2026 for a permanent job.
- Week 1: declaration of arrival at the commune, opening a bank account.
- Her bank offers her LuxTrust Mobile for free. Otherwise, directly from LuxTrust, she would have paid about €50 for 3 years, or about €1.40 a month.
- As soon as her national ID number appears on her social security card, she registers in 5 minutes and downloads her residence certificate: €0.
Take Julien, 35, a cross-border worker who lives in Thionville. He logs in with the French digital identity and checks his tax card. However, he can't use it to sign the tax return assistant. Two options: print the tax return form (form 100), sign it by hand and send it by post, or get LuxTrust to sign online. For your specific case (uploading the form as a PDF on MyGuichet, for example), check on Guichet.lu, electronic tax return (ouvre dans un nouvel onglet).
Common mistakes
- Registering from your phone: registration fails, you need a computer.
- Opening the confirmation e-mail on another device: the link returns an error.
- Forgetting to activate LuxTrust on the LuxTrust website before MyGuichet.lu: the login is refused.
- Using your partner's LuxTrust or card: each product belongs to one person only.
- Counting on your country's digital identity to sign your tax return: it isn't accepted, and you discover the block just before the deadline.
Frequently asked questions
The LuxTrust Mobile app is free to download. The certificate that goes with it is often offered by your Luxembourg bank. Ordered directly from LuxTrust, expect from €50 for 3 years.
Yes. With the Luxembourg electronic identity card and the GouvID app, or with the digital identity of your European country (eIDAS). This last method doesn't let you sign your procedures.
The Token has no longer been usable since 6 January 2025. Switch to the LuxTrust Mobile app, or to the identity card with GouvID if you're Luxembourgish.
On your Luxembourg social security card: 13 digits. If you don't have one yet, your employer requests it from the CCSS when registering you.
Check the 13 digits without spaces. If it persists, your LuxTrust data probably doesn't match the national register: write to [email protected] with the details of your certificate (PDF from LuxTrust's "Test my certificate" service), a copy of your social security card and of your identity card or passport (the residence permit isn't enough).
