- By default
- bulletin No. 3
- Job requires a licence
- bulletin No. 4

Reread the job offer or the organisation's letter. If in doubt, it's No. 3. Then choose one of the four ways of requesting it below.
- Cost
- €0
- Response
- PDF in "My communications"
- You need
- LuxTrust or Luxembourg electronic ID card
Details
Choose the procedure "Request for a criminal record extract for a natural person", with no document to attach if it's for yourself. The PDF has a QR code that lets the employer check that it's authentic.
- Where
- 35, rue de Bonnevoie, L-1260 Luxembourg
- When
- Monday to Friday, 9 am to 12 pm and 1 pm to 4 pm
- Response
- extract handed over immediately

- registration certificate or residence card if you're not a Luxembourg national
Details
The certificate proves that you live here. Having arrived recently doesn't stop you from applying.

- Post
- Cité judiciaire, Plateau du St. Esprit, L-2080 Luxembourg
- You need
- Guichet.lu PDF form or plain paper
- copy of your ID
Details
The extract is sent by post, only to your official address.
- Third-party collection
- tick "authorisation to collect"
- You need
- Guichet.lu power of attorney
- copy of your ID
Details
If this box isn't ticked, the extract is sent to you, not to the person requesting it.
This is for you if
- A job offer or your contract mentions a criminal record extract.
- You're applying to a crèche, a maison relais, a school or a sports club for children.
- You've just arrived in Luxembourg and need to prove your "good character" (your integrity, in the legal sense).
- You're a cross-border worker and your Luxembourg employer is asking you for an extract.
Not for you if you're looking for a company's extract: that's a separate procedure on Guichet.lu (legal person).
Which bulletin for which purpose
| Bulletin | What it contains | Who can obtain it |
|---|---|---|
| No. 1 | All convictions | The courts, in criminal proceedings |
| No. 2 | Criminal and correctional convictions | Some authorities, with your consent |
| No. 3 | Criminal and correctional convictions, except the lightest ones | You, or a third party with your power of attorney |
| No. 4 | No. 3 plus driving bans | You, or a third party with your power of attorney |
| No. 5 | Offences committed against a minor, and bans on working with minors | You, or a third party with your power of attorney |
Among other things, No. 3 doesn't show a suspended prison sentence of 24 months or less, fines totalling €2,500 or less, or community service. If nothing is recorded, the bulletin bears the word "néant" (nil).
A driving ban appears on No. 3 as long as it hasn't ended. It then stays on No. 4 for 3 years.
What your employer is allowed to ask for
The law of 29 March 2013 on criminal records places strict limits on employers:
- Bulletin No. 3: only if the request is written in the job offer and justified by the job.
- Bulletin No. 4: only if a driving licence is essential for the job and required in the contract.
- Bulletin No. 5: for a job or a volunteering role with regular contact with minors.
You're the one who orders the extract and hands it over. For a bulletin No. 3 or No. 4, and for any bulletin given to a public employer, the employer can't keep it for more than one month after the contract is signed. If you're not hired, they must destroy it immediately. After that period, they can't keep anything from it, in any form.
Once you're in the job, they can only ask you for one again in cases provided for by law. For the rest of your rights when being hired, see our guide on employment law in Luxembourg.

Cross-border worker or future arrival: the extract from your country
Guichet.lu reserves the Luxembourg extract for Luxembourg nationals and residents. As long as you live in France, Belgium or Germany, you normally request the one from your country. Convictions handed down in the European Union are centralised by the country of your nationality, through the European ECRIS system.
| Country | Where to request it | Cost | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| France | Bulletin No. 3, online on the Ministry of Justice website (via service-public.gouv.fr) | Free | 1 to 24 hours with FranceConnect, about 2 weeks by post |
| Belgium | Extract from your commune of residence (model 596-2 for a job with minors) | Depends on your commune | Depends on your commune |
| Germany | "Führungszeugnis" on fuehrungszeugnis.bund.de or at the town hall ("erweitertes" for a job with minors) | €13 | A few hours for the digital version |
The German digital version isn't accepted by authorities: in that case, get the paper version. If you no longer have a residence in Belgium, the extract is issued by the Central Criminal Record of the SPF Justice, in Brussels.
Preparing your move? Request the extract from your country before you leave, you'll need it for a first job. The rest of the list is in our guide settling in Luxembourg.
A concrete example
Take Marta, 24, Portuguese, who has been living in Esch-sur-Alzette for three weeks. On 3 November 2026, she lands a job as an educator in a maison relais. The offer said: "bulletin No. 5 required".
- She doesn't have LuxTrust yet: the online route is closed.
- On 4 November, she goes to rue de Bonnevoie with her passport and the registration certificate from her commune.
- She ticks No. 5. Cost: €0. The extract is handed to her on the spot.
- She signs her contract on 10 November. If the maison relais is run by the commune, the extract must be destroyed by 10 December at the latest. For a private employer, the law sets no deadline for No. 5.
If the employer had also asked for the Portuguese extract, she would have had to order it separately in Portugal. Also think about the other paperwork for a first job and, if your profession is regulated, about getting your diploma recognised.
Common mistakes
- Ordering No. 3 for a job with children: the employer expects No. 5, so you have to apply again.
- Sending your paper request without a copy of your ID: a mandatory document is missing, so the request is blocked.
- Writing to the rue de Bonnevoie address: post must go to the Cité judiciaire, otherwise it's returned to sender.
- Paying a private website that offers to "order your criminal record": the official procedure is free.
- As a cross-border worker, requesting the Luxembourg extract out of habit: without residence here, Guichet.lu refers you to your own country.
Frequently asked questions
Nothing. It's free online, at the counter and by post.
At the counter, it's handed to you on the spot. Online, it arrives as a PDF in MyGuichet.lu; Guichet.lu doesn't show an official processing time. By post, allow for the processing time plus postal delivery.
The law doesn't set a period of validity. The employer or the authority decides how recent it must be: check this before ordering.
Yes, but only if the job offer mentions it in writing and the job justifies it. They can't keep it for more than one month after the contract is signed.
Guichet.lu reserves it for Luxembourg nationals and residents. Request the extract from your country. If your employer insists on the Luxembourg one, call the criminal records department on (+352) 24 73 23 87.
