- You have a job offer in Luxembourg.
- Your spouse or parent already lives in Luxembourg.
This is not for you if you are looking for a 'job-seeking visa': it does not exist in Luxembourg.

The four routes actually used
Student. Admitted full-time, for example at the University of Luxembourg, you prove about €1,556 per month in financial resources (scholarship, your account, or your parents' account). You can work 15 hours per week on average. Student Visa D on Guichet.lu (ouvre dans un nouvel onglet).
Au pair. This is a very popular route for Cameroonians: in 2024, Cameroon was the 2nd most common nationality for first-time au pair permits (51 out of 245). You are between 18 and 30 years old. The family, approved by the SNJ, provides food and housing, pays for your language courses, and pays you €554.27 per month. You assist for at most 25 hours per week, for up to one year. Au pair hosting rules (ouvre dans un nouvel onglet).
Employee. Your employer first reports the position to the Employment Development Agency (ADEM), which checks that no suitable local candidate is available. Minimum wage: the social minimum wage (SSM). Remember to get your diploma recognised: €75, with a simple copy.
Family member. Does your spouse live in Luxembourg with a residence permit? That comes under family reunification (ouvre dans un nouvel onglet). Are they an EU citizen? You follow the rules for family members of an EU citizen (ouvre dans un nouvel onglet), which are simpler, with a free visa (79 Cameroonians in 2024).
The driving licence trap
In Luxembourg, a non-European Union driving licence must be transferred within the year following your move. But Guichet.lu is clear: the transfer is refused if the country has signed neither the 1949 Geneva Convention nor the 1968 Vienna Convention. Cameroon is not on the list of signatory countries (ouvre dans un nouvel onglet) published by Guichet.lu.
As a result: even with 10 years of driving in Douala, you must get a Luxembourg driving licence like a beginner:
- registration at an approved driving school, mandatory;
- at least 12 hours of theory and 16 hours of practical driving for a category B licence;
- theory exam available in French or English;
- stamp tax of €30, plus driving school fees;
- followed by a 24-month probationary period and a mandatory training day in Colmar-Berg.
In the meantime, you can drive with your Cameroonian licence, if valid, during your first year of residence: this rule applies to all non-EU/EEA licences. After one year, it is no longer valid in Luxembourg, and without a valid licence, your insurance may refuse to cover you.
Your paperwork: legalisation, not apostille
Cameroon has not signed the Hague Convention (ouvre dans un nouvel onglet) on apostilles: your documents must go through a two-step legalisation.
- The Ministry of External Relations (MINREX) authenticates the original document. This stamp must be less than 3 months old.
- The Belgian Embassy, competent for Luxembourg, legalises it via the TLScontact legalisation centre in Yaoundé (ouvre dans un nouvel onglet). Originals only.
When? Student or au pair visas and diploma recognition accept simple copies. However, you need your legalised marriage certificate for family reunification, and your legalised birth certificate to get married in Luxembourg (ouvre dans un nouvel onglet). Do this before leaving.
Example: Nadège, from Douala to the University of Luxembourg
Nadège, 24, from Douala, is accepted in April 2027 into a Master's program at the University of Luxembourg, starting in September.
1. Her budget before leaving. University application fee: €100. Visa: €250 + €43.10 = €293.10. Enrollment: €400 per semester, with the €100 application fee deducted the first time.
2. Her proof of financial resources. Her parents' bank statement must cover 12 months: €1,555.52 × 12 = €18,666.24, plus tuition fees and return travel costs.
3. The timeline. The decision can take up to 60 days: she submits her application at TLScontact in early June, with a criminal record check less than 3 months old. Everything is in French: no translations required.
4. Arrival. Visa D issued on 1 August 2027, valid until 1 February 2028. Arriving on 1 September, she registers at the commune before 4 September. She applies for her residence permit before 1 November, 3 months before the visa expires (card fee: €80). Without an address, no permit: she read our guide to finding accommodation.
5. Driving licence. 4 years of driving in Douala do not count: she will have to retake the category B licence through a driving school.
Beware of scams
- Fake recruiters: a real Luxembourg employer will never ask you for money for a contract or a visa.
- Fake appointments: TLScontact is the only provider managing appointments. Do not buy them from an intermediary (TLScontact alert (ouvre dans un nouvel onglet)).
- Fake visas: the D visa is affixed to your passport by the Belgian Embassy. A "visa" received by email or WhatsApp is fake.
- Fake au pair families: a real family is approved by the SNJ. If you are asked for money, be suspicious.
- No job-seeker visa or lottery for Luxembourg.
Common mistakes
- Relying on your Cameroonian driving licence: it will never be converted. Plan for driving school.
- Leaving without legalising your marriage certificate: your spouse will not be able to apply for family reunification.
- Having a photocopy legalised: only original documents are accepted.
- Submitting in late July for the start of the academic year: with a 60-day processing time, you risk missing the start of classes.
