- How

Details
An apostille is a stamp authenticating a public document for use in a foreign country. It costs €20.
This is for you if
- You just arrived and your bank, landlord, or employer asks for official proof of address, for example to open an account or find housing.
- You need to prove who lives with you (spouse, partner, children), for example for daycare or financial aid: you need the extended certificate.
- A foreign administration asks you for a list of your previous addresses in Luxembourg.
- You are preparing an application (naturalisation, loan, rental) that requires a recent document.
This is not for you if you are asked to prove where you pay tax (for a foreign bank or tax treaty): that requires a tax residence certificate (certificat de résidence fiscale), issued by the Luxembourg Inland Revenue (ACD), which is a different procedure (dedicated Guichet.lu page (ouvre dans un nouvel onglet)).

Standard, extended, or historical: which one to request?
The standard certificate shows your identity and your address registered in the RNPP. The RNPP is the National Register of Natural Persons: the database where the State registers every resident.
The extended certificate adds your spouse or registered partner and your children living at the same address. It replaces the former household composition certificate. Your parents do not appear on it, even if they live with you.
The 'historical' certificate is not a separate document. It is the standard certificate with the previous addresses option checked: each former address appears with its registration dates. Useful for proving how long you have lived in Luxembourg.
You can also add your national identification number (your 13-digit ID number), your nationality, and your marital status. Only add what the organisation actually requests.
A concrete example
Marco, 31, Italian, moves to Wiltz in March 2026 with his partner, with whom he has entered into a registered partnership, and their daughter. He submits his arrival declaration at the municipality. He then needs:
- a standard certificate for his bank (March);
- an extended certificate for his daughter's crèche registration (April);
- a new standard certificate for an application in July: the March one is more than 3 months old.
At the municipality counter: 3 certificates × €3 = €9, and three visits during opening hours.
Online: Marco doesn't have LuxTrust yet, but his Italian electronic ID card is a recognized eIDAS electronic ID. Once his national ID number is assigned, he downloads all three PDFs: €0, without moving anywhere.
His case shows the real trap: an expired certificate. Instead of keeping one in advance, he generates a new one for each request. In a relationship? To compare statuses, read marriage, PACS or cohabitation.
Common mistakes
- Sending a certificate over 3 months old: your application will be rejected or blocked, and you will have to request a new one.
- Confusing it with the tax residency certificate: foreign authorities or banks will send it back to you; it is neither the same document nor the same administration.
- Requesting the standard certificate when the extended one is required: to prove household composition (daycare, subsidies, rental), only the extended certificate lists your spouse and children.
- Requesting the certificate before being registered: without a registered arrival declaration, the municipality cannot issue anything and your MyGuichet.lu account will not show your new address.
- Adding all options: nationality, national ID number, and marital status are personal data, so only provide them if specifically requested.
Frequently asked questions
Yes online: the PDF generated in your MyGuichet.lu account costs nothing. At the municipality, an administrative fee may apply, the amount depending on the municipality (€3 in Wiltz in 2026).
It does not have an expiration date, but most administrations require a certificate that is less than 3 months old. Some procedures accept up to 6 months: read the list of required documents carefully.
With a Luxembourg electronic ID card, the GouvID app, or an eIDAS method from another European country, you can log in to MyGuichet.lu. Otherwise, go to the population office (bureau de la population) of your municipality with an ID document.
Request a certificate of residence with the 'previous addresses' option: each address will be displayed along with its registration dates in the national register.
It no longer exists: it was replaced by the extended certificate of residence, which also lists your spouse or registered partner and children living with you.
Not to prove their current address: the certificate is intended for people registered in the national register who reside in Luxembourg. A cross-border commuter proves their address using a document from their country of residence. If they previously lived in Luxembourg, check with their former municipality for a certificate mentioning their past addresses.
