This is for you if
- You live in Luxembourg with your child, whatever your nationality.
- You are a cross-border worker, employed in Luxembourg, and your children live with you or, if you are separated, with their other parent.
- You are raising the children of your spouse or partner.
- Your child is about to turn 18 and is still in secondary school.
Not for you if you're looking for the benefit paid in August: it has its own page, the school start allowance.
Key figures
| Item | Value | Year or date |
|---|---|---|
| From 0 to 5 years | €315.04 per month | Since 1 June 2026 |
| From 6 to 11 years (supplement of €23.81) | €338.85 per month | Since 1 June 2026 |
| From 12 years (supplement of €59.44) | €374.48 per month | Since 1 June 2026 |
| Base before the June index | €307.35 per month | January to May 2026 |
| End of entitlement | Month of 18th birthday, or 25 if in secondary school | 2026 |
| Payment | By the 25th of the month at the latest | 2026 |
The amount has been indexed since 1 October 2021: it follows the index brackets, like salaries. The allowance is not taxable in Luxembourg (Article 115, No. 5 of the Income Tax Act). For three children aged 2, 7 and 13, a family receives 315.04 + 338.85 + 374.48 = €1,028.37 per month.
Children whose entitlement started before 1 August 2016, in a family of at least two children, keep a transitional scheme. Their amount depends on the number of children in the family group, for example €353.34 per child in a group of 2 children and €409.40 in a group of 3, excluding age supplements. Check your CAE statement.
Payment dates in 2026
| Period | Dates |
|---|---|
| January to March | 23 January, 25 February, 25 March |
| April to June | 24 April, 22 May, 25 June |
| July to September | 24 July, 25 August, 25 September |
| October to December | 23 October, 25 November, 18 December |
This is the date the payment is sent to your bank. Allow one to two more days, sometimes longer for a foreign bank.
Entitlement starts in the month of birth. If you move to Luxembourg, it starts on the 1st of the month following your arrival declaration at the commune.
Cross-border worker: who pays first?
You are entitled to it if you work in Luxembourg and are registered with the CCSS (Centre commun de la sécurité sociale). Your children must live in the European Union or in a country linked to Luxembourg by an agreement.
When two countries could pay, the European rule decides: work takes priority over residence.
- Your spouse doesn't work: Luxembourg pays everything, every month.
- Your spouse works or receives unemployment benefit in your country: that country pays first. Luxembourg pays a differential supplement, the gap between its amounts and what you already receive, calculated child by child.
- Your spouse works in a third country: the country that pays the most pays everything.
In France, with only one child over 3, the CAF pays nothing: so Luxembourg pays every month.
The supplement for January to June arrives at the earliest at the end of July, the one for July to December at the earliest at the end of January.
A worked example
Camille, 34, lives in Thionville and works in Luxembourg. Marc, her husband, is an employee in Metz. They have Léo, 4, and Inès, 8.
- Luxembourg amount: 315.04 + 338.85 = €653.89 per month.
- Marc works in France, so the CAF pays first: €152.25 per month for two children since 1 April 2026, if the household's 2024 income does not exceed €79,980.
- Luxembourg supplement: 653.89 − 152.25 = €501.64 per month.
- From July to December 2026: 501.64 × 6 = €3,009.84, paid in one go, at the earliest at the end of January 2027.
Above the French ceiling, the CAF pays less and the supplement increases accordingly. The CAE sets the exact calculation, taking into account other French benefits of the same nature. The school start allowance paid by the CAF, for example, can temporarily reduce the supplement.
At 18: what changes
The allowance stops in the month of the 18th birthday. It continues until age 25 for:
- secondary education attended in person, at least 24 hours per week (evening and distance courses excluded);
- an apprenticeship paid less than the SSM (minimum social wage).
Higher education does not give entitlement. An income at least equal to the SSM for 4 months out of 12 (paid internship or job) also stops the payment.
The CAE writes to you two months before the 18th birthday, then every summer. Since July 2026, its letter contains a QR code linking to an online procedure. Without a reply, payment stops on 31 July.
Common mistakes
- Cross-border worker, forgetting the application in your country: your CAE file stays blocked.
- Applying late: after one year, the overdue months are lost.
- Expecting the supplement every month: it comes twice a year.
- Not reporting that your adult child has finished secondary school or has a job: the CAE will claim back the overpayment.
What could change
As of 9 October 2026, bill 8746 provides, from 1 January 2027:
- +€45 per month per child, and €15 more from age 12 (values before the June 2026 index);
- for a cross-border worker, living with their spouse's child would be enough to prove that they provide for the child's maintenance. This is what the CJEU (Court of Justice of the European Union) ruled on 18 December 2025. Useful if you live as an unmarried couple or in a PACS.
The vote is scheduled for the sitting of 15 October 2026. Until that vote, these amounts remain a proposal.
